Interesting facts of Fortune cookies....

After a delicious buffet from a Chinese restaurant we all got fortune cookies. Our little grandson opened all the cookies and he wanted us to read the message in it and was enjoying the essence in it. He started to analyse the message and to wish the after effects of it feeling so proud of him. Even grownups are enjoying the hidden message of them inside the cookies. It is mind-blowing and truly inspirational. A great idea after a grand lunch/dinner to nurture and nourish about the fortune message which can build up one's self esteem and self confidence.
The fortune cookie is made of fine flour, sesame seed oil, vanilla essence and sugar. The importance of the cookies are the piece of paper inside with a fortune printed on it along with lucky numbers. It is very interesting to know that fortune cookies are served in USA and other Western countries, but it is not a tradition in China. Fortune cookies are originated in California by David Jung, a Chinese immigrant in 1918. The idea was to distribute the cookies with a strip of paper with an inspiration Bible scripture on it, free to the poor wandering near his shop. There are different versions of the cookies in 1914 by a Japanese immigrant in San Francisco. In 1983 in the mock trial done to determine the origins of the fortune cookie ruled in favour of San Francisco. Fortune cookies took the role of desserts in Chinese restaurants of western countries after second World War. Fortune cookies won the heart of the people through the fortune message. Almost all the messages are feel good in nature and so heart warming. Earlier fortune cookies was made by hand with the help of chop sticks. In 1964 an automatic machine was introduced by Edward Louie of San Francisco's Lotus Fortune Cookie Company that folds the dough and slips in the fortune paper strip. Today 60 million fortune cookies are shipped in a month by Wonton Food Inc. of Long Island City, the world's largest fortune cookies manufacturer.
