San Antonio City Diwali 2016......

It was an honour to participate in the eighth celebration of city Diwali at down town San Antonio as a rider in the colourful boat parade and viewing the cultural activities in connection with the event. We were at San Antonio in 2009 and had participated in the first Diwali celebrations. Chennai is the sister city of San Antonio. In honour of Chennai and in collaboration with the Indian city, San Antonio for the last continuous eight years are celebrating Diwali, the Hindu festival of illuminating lights to overcome darkness and celebrate the victory good over evil. We are so proud to know that this is the only city- sanctioned programme of its kind in the nation which takes place at La Villita. This year about 15000 participated from all over the state. This year's attraction was the colourful and musical boat parade represented by different states of India representing the culture of each state, traditional Diya floats, live music and dance, a fireworks display, cultural programmes of various states of India, fashion show, artisan vendors and stalls of mouth-watering Indian cuisine. It was an excellent experience to see a mini India all over the event along with the people all over the world. It was a true friendly festival with great ambience.
Kerala state was represented with our traditional boat, chundan vallam, decorated  with temple arts, corridors, muthukuda, nettipattam, pookkalam and floral arrangements, and performance with thuzha (oar), welcome thalam,  mohiniyattom and kaikottikali. The music of welcoming the viewers was a nice encouragement for the riders to perform in the boat. It was a nice experience to waive the thousands of the great audience from west and east and  who were motivating and encouraging us and to feel the love and warmth in return. Thanks to the city of San Antonio for honouring our festival and also thanks to the organisers of San Antonio United Malayalee Association for selecting me also as a rider in the boat.
