Kerala Piravi....Remembering the beautiful State in India

November 1st is Kerala Piravi Dinam(day). The State Kerala in India was created on November 1st 1956. The state is celebrating its 60th birthday today. Kerala is the southern most state of India. Before it was three independent provinces named Malabar, Cochin and Travancore. The name of the state in Malayalam is 'Keralam' and comes from 'kera' means coconut and 'alam' means house. The major crop in Kerala was coconut trees. Also our neighbouring state Karnataka was created on the same day.
The name Kerala is said to have got from the name of the first ruler, Keralian Thamburan who ruled one of these provinces in the early centuries while it is believed to have originated from the word 'kera' or coconut tree which is widely grown in the state. According to Hindu mythology Parasurama, the sixth incarnation of Mahavishu, plung his 'Mazhu'(axe) from Kanyakumari to the sea and the sea receded to create the land Keralam. This state has fourteen districts with Thiruvananthapuram as the capital. Kerala stretch along Gokarnam to Parassala with Arabian sea as the border on one side and the Western Ghats as the border on the other side. Malayalees across the world celebrate 'Kerala Piravi'. The people in the state wear traditional attire of the state as part of the celebrations and conduct competitions on recitations, speech, reading and writing in schools, offices, communities and local bodies in Malayalam language.
Kerala is truly the undiscovered part of India. The 560km long narrow strip of land is a tropical paradise in earth sandwiched between the tall mountains on the east and the Arabian sea on the west. The land is covered with dense tropical forest and fertile lands and hills. The beautiful beaches, still bays, back waters and rivers are the main attractions of the state. Coconut, coffee, spices, tea, fruit trees, arecanut, paddy and vegetables are grown in Kerala. The homesteads of Kerala are unique with all the edible crops including banana, yams, vegetables, condiments, herbs etc. Kerala is a best tourist destination and it is known as 'God's Own Country' with the beauty of enchanting greenery.
