Onam brings Prosperity, Happiness and Peace

Onam, a national festival of Kerala, India is celebrated in Chingam month of Malayalam calendar. Onam used to fall on later August or earlier September. This year Onam is on 14th September. It is a harvest festival. This festival is celebrated by Malayalees of  all religions, Government and non governmental organisations taking this as an opportunity to foster communal harmony, ecological sensitivity and peace among the people. The main celebration of Onam is on Thiruvonam.
The important observances of Onam lasts for ten days includes Pookalam (floral designs), distribute agriproducts and new clothes to the needy, after a bath wear new clothes, Onakkali (traditional plays and games), Vallamkali (country boat race) and Sadya (a vegetarian feast) with all the family members together with grandparents. The two days following Thiruvonam is also celebrated as third and fourth onam.
Onam is the occasion for people to remind themselves of all the pervasive nature of divine. It is a moment to reincarnate a past of goodness and prosperity.
Onam promotes communal harmony, social cohesion and peace.
 Onam strengthens the bonds of unity and brings happiness, prosperity and peace to all.
