Sarojini Nangiaramma....Living legend of Koodiyattam and Koothu...

receiving award from our H'ble President on Oct 5th 2016.
Sarojini Nagiaramma, the senior most and veteran of Koodiyattam and Koothu performs with grace and elegancy even in the age of great 77. She has been bestowed the Central Sangeet Natak Academy award for 2015 for her continuous contribution to Indian theatre as a Koodiyattam artist. Her name is scripted in history being the fist Nangiar to receive the national award. She cherish the great moment to receive the award from our Honourable President on 5th Oct 2016. She is greatly thankful to the Almighty for the opportunity of performing Sreekrishnacharitham Nangiarkoothu at Meghadoot theatre, New Delhi along with her family on Oct 7th 2016 after the receipt of the award. Born in Edanad near Aluva as the child of Koodiyattam couples she was trained in this temple art at the age of five by her mother Ammukutty Nagiaramma. The friendship and research with precious books of her father on the art was the gateway of her scientific knowledge of both Koodiyattam and Koothu. The art is presented in the traditional temple theatre known as koothambalam. The solo play is on the legends of Lord Krishna based on the verses interpreted through mime and dance. Being a temple art she performs in temples only to keep up the tradition. Now she is in the field for the past seventy years. Both her sons Kalamandalam Narayanan Nambiar and Edanad Ramachandran Nambiar are Mizhavu artists. She is the 'Guru' of her grandchildren who are already in the passion of learning the art form. Her dedication and devotion is the driving force to stay active in the field.
